AI Lessons

We recorded each lesson in our abbreviated six-part AI-teaching series. The purpose of these videos is to help schools independently teach students about AI. Teachers are welcome to project these videos onto a screen at the front of a classroom, so a cohort can watch together — there is allocated time within each lesson for discussion, interactive activities and group projects. Viewers are encouraged to have access to laptops/computers.

The AI lessons can also be watched individually. Outside the school context, people of all ages can consume these videos. These lessons are intended to spread AI literacy to all.

  • Lesson 1: What is AI?

The first lesson covers the basics of artificial intelligence: it unpacks what AI is, how it can be used and how it functions. It includes a significant hands-on portion, where students will interact with AI-powered websites. This lesson is best suited for students in grades 5-8.

  • Lesson 2: Machine Learning

In the second lesson, students will learn how machine learning models work at a basic level. They will also use Teachable Machine to train their own image classification models. This lesson is slightly more advanced — it is best suited for students in grades 7-8.

  • Lesson 3: Generative AI

In the third lesson, students are introduced to Generative AI. The video explains what Generative AI is, how it’s impacting society and covers the basics of prompt engineering. This lesson is best suited for students in grades 5-8.

  • Lesson 4: Deepfakes

The fourth lesson is about deepfakes. Through this video, students will learn what deepfakes are, how to distinguish between real images and AI-generated ones, and consider the implications of deepfake technology on society. This lesson is best suited for students in grades 5-8.

  • Lesson 5: Capstone Projects

In the final lesson, students culminate the course by drawing their own AI-powered website/robot — the Capstone Project. This lesson is best suited for students in grades 5-8.

  • Bonus Lesson: AI in the Real-World

The bonus lesson, which isn’t a part of the standard EngageAI curriculum, explores how artificial intelligence can be used in the real-world. Working through two case studies (supporting a pastry shop owner and hotel management team), students will understand how artificial intelligence technologies can be leveraged in simple ways to create meaningful impact. This lesson is advanced — it is best suited for students in grades 7-9.
